First meetings of the Sustainable Construction Wood operating group

The operational groupWood Sustainable ConstructionDuring the months of June and July, it held several meetings in which it brought together different construction experts, includingThermochip(national reference in the manufacturing and marketing ofsandwich panels). The meetings, which were held at the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences – CSIC (Madrid), are part of the projectSmart tool for selecting wood products for constructionand they have had the presence of architects, promoters and builders who use wood as a construction material. They have addressed emerging issues and various themes around the use and applications of wood.

The purpose of these meetings has been twofold. On the one hand, to publicize the objectives and activities of the innovation project developed by the Operational Group and on the other, to collect first-hand the opinion and experience of technicians and agents in the sector in the use of material in construction, the difficulties they encounter and the solutions they adopt to solve them. According toJose Antonio Tenoriofrom the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences: “The origin of this project is to look at the forest and its value chain to focus on the demand for wood and its products.” “Currently, it is built with wood in single-family homes or in small housing cooperatives, but it is not yet widely implemented in large projects,” he stated.

Wood as a material of the 21st century

The meetings on June 24 and July 11 were held with agents from the construction sector. At the 4th of July meeting,Meeting on wood and construction: Wood industryProducers, manufacturers and distributors of wood products for building came together. Most of them emphasized the environmental advantages of wood as a renewable material, low energy consumption, low toxicity, CO2 absorption, durable, reusable, recyclable and compostable.

In that same meeting,Diego Rodriguez, technical director of Thermochip, presented the evolution of the first manufacturing company ofsandwich panelof wood in possession of DIT (Technical Approval Document issued by the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences) to the construction innovations they provide today.

The purpose of these meetings has been to collect the necessary information for the creation of an online tool that can be used by architects, engineers and prescribers in the construction sector, providing reliable data on the technical and environmental characteristics of wood products and facilitating prescription for its users.

Obtaining technical and environmental data on wood and wood products manufactured in our country with wood from the Spanish mountains and intended for construction is one of the most important activities in the project. In the next step, with the incorporation of reliable technical and environmental data to wood products of Spanish origin, the aim is to demonstrate the excellence of this raw material as a construction material based on its environmental values, associated with sustainability, in addition to improving its presence and competitiveness in the markets.

The operational group projectWood Sustainable ConstructionIt began its journey in August 2018 and has a budget of €495,066.72 euros, 80% co-financed by the European Union, through the EAFDER funds. and 20% for the MAP.
